Songoro Kitenge African Sunset Oil on Canvas
African artist Songoro Kitenge belonged to the Bahima tribe, a nomadic group of people who moved up and down the lakes and rivers that separated the eastern region of the Congo and the western regions of Rwanda and Burundi. Kitenge had no formal education in art, yet his work, which vibrantly depicts the lifestyle of his tribe, is prominently displayed in government embassies throughout Central Africa.
This beautiful oil on canvas depicts an African village nestled along the shores of Lake Kivu or Lake Tanganyika at sunset. Deep warm red tones perpetuate throughout the skyline an are reflected in the lake's surface. Lovely green tones dominate the foreground. Likely painted in the the 1950s or early 1960s. Narrow wood frame attached to the canvas.
