About Us
Magpie Reclamations LLC began when our Founder and CEO, Rick Schneider, started upcycling furniture as a hobby. As a long-time legal advocate for sustainability and environmental protections, Rick quickly realized that there was a huge amount of perfectly useable furniture, including pieces with extraordinary history, being thrown away every day. He also found that many people like himself valued reclaiming unique and long-lasting furniture that would otherwise end up in landfills, but there were few companies looking to meet this need.
In May of 2021, Rick founded Magpie Reclamations to help service the vast demand for sustainable furniture options in the DMV area. The Magpie seemed to be a perfect emblem for the business. It is a beautiful songbird, one of the world’s most intelligent creatures, a symbol of good luck in many cultures, and is best known for recovering discarded trinkets and treasures. After assembling a diverse team committed to fighting for a more sustainable future, Magpie Reclamations has become one of the DMV’s leading sellers of upcycled, refurbished, and locally sourced vintage furniture and home décor.
Our Mission
Magpie Reclamations was founded on the principle that business can be a force for positive change. From the outset, our primary goals have been to reduce waste by giving furniture a second life and to educate our clients on sustainable furniture and home décor purchasing. We want to empower consumers to make meaningful choices that can positively impact our community and our planet. We pride ourselves on using environmentally conscious techniques and products to provide the highest-quality cleaning, refinishing, and refurbishing of unique, stylish, and durable pieces of furniture and home décor.
Your purchase at Magpie Reclamations is:
Less wasteful
More than 10 million tons of furniture and furnishings end up in landfills every year; by purchasing secondhand you are directly reducing that number
Limiting further deforestation
New furniture requires new materials. Deforestation is one of the leading causes of global warming, loss in biodiversity, and soil erosion.
Limits plastic production
Plastic waste is a massive issue affecting all aspects of the climate change issue. More than 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the oceans each year, harming ecosystems, animals, and humans.
Reduce carbon emissions
The United States is the leading world importer of furniture. Buying locally sourced and reclaimed furniture lowers your carbon footprint.
